COL James G. Young Jr.
1953 – 2018 Obituary

Colonel James G. Young, JR, man of valor and beloved father, grandfather, and friend passed away in Guntown, MS on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the age of 64. Col. Young was born on February 28, 1953, to Sarah Henry Young and James Grady Young, in Batesville, MS. James was an active member of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and choir.

James was a graduate of Pontotoc High School, class of 1971, the University of Mississippi, Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting in 1977, and a Masters of Business Administration in 1983. He also earned a Masters of Strategic Studies from the US Army War College in 2004.

Col. Young retired from the MS Army National Guard. While active he served as Commander, Company D, 1st Battalion 185th Aviation, Company E, 185th Aviation, Company G, 185th Aviation, The Army Aviation Support Facility #2, Tupelo, 1108th AVCRAD, Gulfport. Commander of Theatre Aviation Maintenance Program – Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom.

While in the US Army, James also served with the White House Communications Agency, in Washington, DC and as a flight instructor at Ft. Rucker, AL.

Young is survived by his mother, Sarah Henry Young of Pontotoc, his brother Randy Young of Pontotoc, his sister, Jennifer Hufano of Las Vegas, NV, two daughters, Dr. Mary Allyson Lowry (Ruffin) of Jackson and Anna McCarley (Scott) of Guntown, four grandchildren, Lynley and Parker McCarley, and Thomson and Lucy Lowry, three step daughters, Amy McCoy, Anna Sinclair, Alice Griggs and their children, one niece, Sarah Hufano, and four nephews, Ryan Stutsy, Luke Gillespie, Benjamin Hufano, and Tyler Young.

James will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. James was preceded in death by his father, James Grady Young Sr., his brother, Keith Young, twin sisters and his grandparents, Allen Alfred Henry and Mary Anna Mitchell Henry.

Pallbearers will be Lynn McGee, James Robert Hubbard, Jon David Naugher, Kyle Steward, Jimmy Kinney, and Don Clayton.

A Celebration of Life Service is set for Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc, with burial to follow in the Pontotoc Memorial Gardens. Reverend Doug Westmoreland and Brother Tim Green will officiate. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Wednesday, January 16th and 1:00 pm until the service on Thursday, January 17, 2018 at Browning Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church at 937 Mt. Vernon Rd. Tupelo, MS, 38804.
