Born on August 6, 1938 in Jasper County, Mississippi, Chester was the eleventh child born to Steve and Lena Sims. He attended Bay Springs High, Jones County Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi. He was an avid Golden Eagles fan and football season ticket holder.
Chester married Julia Herrin in 1959. He retired from Federal Express Corporation where he was a Service Assurance Leader. He was also an active member for over fifty years and a current Deacon at McLaurin Heights Baptist Church. He loved his Lord and enjoyed serving on several committees. Chester also loved his country and was a retired Senior Master Sergeant from the186th Air Refueling Wing of the Mississippi Air National Guard with over 26 years of service. Chester was a Mississippi Certified Tree farmer and a member of the Benton County Forestry Association. He loved his time at his cabin in Ashland, MS surrounded by his trees and nature. Chester was also a civil servant, working on the committee to incorporate Pearl into its own city and was the first Election Commissioner for the City of Pearl.
Chester is survived by his wife of 59 years, Julia Herrin Sims, daughter Lanell CoAnn Sims Ressler (Rick) of Olive Branch, MS, son Todd Herrin Sims (Kate) of Collierville, TN, grandchildren, Katie Ressler Montgomery (Daniel), Jacob Coburn Ressler, Jillian Grace Ressler all of Olive Branch, MS and Zachary Rawlins Sims of Collierville, TN, great-granddaughter Laura Katherine Montgomery and unborn great-grandson, Isaac Daniel Montgomery. Chester is also survived by his brothers Toby Sims and Steve Sims of Louin, MS and sisters Bobbie Johnson, Laurel, MS Glenda Ann Jones, Richmond, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at McLaurin Heights Baptist Church on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held at McLaurin Heights Baptist Church from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Sims, Dean Sims, and Kenneth Sims.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to McLaurin Heights Baptist Church, Youth Department.
