Military Service Tribute, Honors, and Obituary:
Recognizing and Honoring a Fallen Hero, Who Served Within the Mississippi National Guard. “Fallen, Yet Not Forgotten”.
In recognition of our proud American tradition of honorable service which our military men and women have given to their country and our State, we honor a Fallen Hero. Our nation, our state, and the National Guard Association of MS (NGAMS) regard the memorializing of its retired military deceased as an honorable and sacred obligation.
Another great Soldier and Fallen Hero has been released from duty, passed from our ranks on June 25, 2025, and has moved on to his heavenly home. Retired Master Sergeant Sherman Cody Hull, age 92, who had served in Service Co., 155th Infantry; 114th MP Co.; and HHC, 168th Engineer Group has departed and gone to a better place with our Lord and Savior.
It takes a special person to serve within the military for their country, giving up their family time, comfort, and safety for their country, ultimately for all Americans to enjoy their freedoms, safety, and way of life. We now applaud you for your service to our country. A special message from General Douglas McArthur remains applicable today for our servicemen that have passed: “Old Soldiers never die; they just fade away”.
Rest in Peace Soldier. We applaud your patriotism, sacrifices, and brave efforts in serving our country and your family for their support of your service. We thank you for your service. Without your efforts and your families’ support, our country would not stand so boldly, shine so bright, and live so free.
You now have earned a rest, so go fly with the Angels, go rest high on that mountain; your work on earth is done. Go to heaven a-shoutin’ Love for the Father and the Son.
Another great Soldier has gone home, “Fallen, Yet Not Forgotten, Soldier for Life”.
Obituary, Visitation, and Service details:
Sherman Cody Hull passed away on Friday, June 25, 2025. He was 92 years old. He was born on April 5, 1932, to Sherman Cody Hull, Sr. and Laura Annis Oakes Hull.
Sherman and his wife, Ollie S. Hull married 70 years ago on May 14, 1955.
In 1948-49 he joined the Service Company of 155th Infantry Division of the Mississippi National Guard at the age of 17.
In 1951 his Unit Federalized and was sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina for 6 months. Then Sherman was assigned to the Divisional Headquarters of the 24th Infantry Division for 6 months in Korea. He also served 6 months in Sendai, Japan, the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture and the largest city in the Tohoku region.
During the Korean War, Sendai, Japan, served as a crucial rear base for the United States and UN forces, facilitating the supply and transit of soldiers and materials to the
Korean Peninsula. While in Korea, served as Bodyguard and Driver for generals, including Brigadier General Dunkelberg.
In 1952 he returned to US and discharged from the Military and rejoined the Mississippi National Guard 155th Infantry. Helped during the 1953 Vicksburg Tornado.
In 1955 he joined the U.S. Army Reserve 412th Engineer Brigade. Subsequently, he serviced in the 114th Military Police of the Mississippi National Guard. He retired from the 168th Engineer Group of the Mississippi National Guard with the rank of Master Sergeant after 42 years combined military service of the active and reserve Army and the Mississippi National Guard.
Upon returning to Vicksburg in 1952, Sherman worked at Garvis LaGrone Gulf Station. It was located on the northeast corner of Washington and Bowmar. In 1955, he went to work for Sears on Washington Street, in the automotive service center.
On September 1st, 1956, Sherman C. Hull, Jr. joined the Vicksburg Police Department at the age of 23. His first assignment was a “Beat Patrolman” on Washington St. At that time, he rotated duty in 3 shifts (7am-3pm, 3pm-11pm and 11pm-7am).
One of his most notable assignments included his transfer in 1958 to the Motorcycle Unit after Jason Moody, VPD Motorcycle Police, was accidently shot and could no longer ride. Sherman fondly recalls riding a 1950s model “Harley Davidson Electra Glide”. Members of the Motorcycle Gang Sherman rode with included Erwin Grant, Morris Peck, Tommy and James Bishop. He also recalls that Paul Barrett was an original member of the VPD Motorcycle Police. He fondly remembers patrolling the neighborhoods on his motorcycle and stopping to mentor some of the youth who were shooting basketball, etc. He also remembered one of the kids he would give a ride on his “Harley”. Later that kid became Sherriff of Warren County, Martin Pace. Perhaps, Sherman played a foundational role in the Sherriff’s quest to serve in law enforcement.
Sherman was promoted to Deputy Chief of VPD under Chief, Herman Wicker. His first assignment was to organize parking for the first year of the Miss Mississippi Pageant held at the Vicksburg Auditorium. The end result was the creation of the new directional parking lanes in front of the Auditorium where there previously existed a “grass medium”.
He became a licensed airplane pilot in the early 60s.
He oversaw the raising of the Caro. Mayor Johnny Holland offered assistance to the Park Service in the raising of the Caro. He contacted Anderson Tully, resulting in the use of crains and barges. He sent Sherman to provide security and safety services. Mostly to insure radio communications in case of emergency. Sherman assisted in retrieve artifacts as the divers brought them to the surface.
On September 6, 1976, Sherman retired from the VPD after 20 years. He later had a career as an Insurance Claims Analyst, for which he was able to use his police training.
On March 6, 2025, just one day after his 92nd birthday, Sherman C. Hull, Membership No. 354, was presented the “Honorary Life Membership Certificate” of the Army and Navy Club of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The certificate citation read, “In recognition and sincere appreciation of outstanding loyalty and dedication to The Army and Navy Club of Vicksburg. This honor recognizes the commitment demonstrated towards the programs, activities, and ideals of The Army and Navy Club of Vicksburg, the U.S. Military, and the Nation”. He is the oldest active
member of the ANC.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Sherman Cody Hull, Sr. and Laura Annis Oakes Hull; sons, Sherman C. Hull, III and Steven Earl Hull; granddaughter, Emily Laverne Cowart; siblings, Edna Smith, Grace Saar, Virgil Hull, Joy Bodet, Betty Davis and Don Raymond Hull.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ollie S. Hull; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 28, 2025, at Glenwood Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
