Military Service Tribute, Honors, and Obituary:
Recognizing and Honoring a Fallen Hero, Who Served Within the Mississippi National Guard. “Fallen, Yet Not Forgotten”.
In recognition of our proud American tradition of honorable service which our military men and women have given to their country and our State, we honor a Fallen Hero. Our nation, our state, and the National Guard Association of MS (NGAMS) regard the memorializing of its retired military deceased as an honorable and sacred obligation.
Another great Soldier and Fallen Hero has been released from duty, passed from our ranks on Aug 4, 2024 and has moved on to his heavenly home. Retired Colonel Dewey Frank Myers, age 95, who had served within the MSARNG in the 972nd Dental Detachment, 213th Medical Brigade has departed and gone to a better place with our good Lord.
It takes a special person to serve within the military for their country, giving up their family time, comfort, and safety for their country, ultimately for all Americans to enjoy their freedoms, safety, and way of life. We now applaud you for your service to our country. A special message from General Douglas McArthur remains applicable today for our servicemen that have passed: “Old Soldiers never die; they just fade away”.
Rest in Peace Soldier. We applaud your patriotism, sacrifices, and brave efforts in serving our country and your family for their support of your service. We thank you for your service. Without your efforts and your families’ support, our country would not stand so boldly, shine so bright, and live so free.
You now have earned a rest, so go fly with the Angels, go rest high on that mountain; your work on earth is done. Go to heaven a-shoutin’ Love for the Father and the Son.
Another great Soldier has gone home, “Fallen, Yet Not Forgotten, Soldier for Life”.
Obituary, Visitation, and Service details:
Dr. Dewey Frank Myers passed away peacefully on August 4, 2024, at St. Dominic Hospital.
Dewey was born in Raleigh, Mississippi, on March 2, 1939, to Mildred McLendon Myers and Frank Paul Myers. An only child, Dewey grew up in a household and community where he was deeply loved.
After graduating from Raleigh High School in 1957, Dewey attended Ole Miss, where he was a member of his beloved Sigma Nu Fraternity. He then attended the University of Tennessee Dental School in Memphis and graduated with a D.D.S. degree in 1963.
Dewey served in the United States Navy Dental Corps for two years, was then in a dental practice for a short time in Magee, MS, before joining the dental staff at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Pineville, LA. He later transferred to the VA Hospital in Jackson, where he served for 28 years before retiring in July 1999 as Chief of the Dental Service.
One of the joys of his dental career was working with the dental students at the University of Mississippi Dental School as a part-time clinical instructor for over 40 years.
Dewey was also a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard. He was Commander of the 972nd Dental Detachment for 12 years before retiring as a Colonel in 1999.
Dewey had many career and military successes, but his favorite roles in life were husband, ‘Dad’ and ‘Granddaddy’. He was incredibly proud of his and Beverly’s children and grandchildren and enjoyed supporting their many activities. Dewey was a people person, and never met a stranger. He loved visiting with people, was sincerely interested in their stories, and had an uncanny way of making each person he met feel special.
Dewey had a witty, outgoing charm that made people want to be around him. He was often referred to as “the life of the party.” He loved telling jokes, many of which were told to him by his patients at the VA, which he in turn would share with family and friends.
Dewey’s hobbies were everything Ole Miss and New Orleans, summer trips to the beach, gardening, and enjoying lively meals with family and friends at many of his favorite restaurants.
Anyone who knew him would agree that he definitely made the very most of the 85 years that God blessed him with, and he will be greatly missed by the many lives he touched.
Dr. Myers was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Mills Myers, and his parents, Frank and Mildred Myers. He is survived by his son, Christopher Paul Myers, and his wife, Mary Margaret Swayze Myers of Oxford, MS, and his daughter, Erin Myers Rosebery, and her husband, Jay Rosebery of Dallas, TX. He leaves behind his wonderful grandchildren: Matthew Swayze Myers of Atlanta, GA; Kathleen Grace Myers of Oxford; Elizabeth Reese Rosebery of Dallas and Christopher Jay Rosebery of Dallas.
Dr. Myers was a communicant of St. James’ Episcopal Church located at 3921 Oak Ridge Drive in Jackson. His family will receive visitors there on Thursday, August 8, at 3:00pm, followed by a memorial service at 4:00pm.
The family would like to thank the staff and care providers at The Blake in Flowood for the wonderful love and support they showed Dewey during his stay for just over one year.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. James’ Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice.
