Obituary
In Military Service Tribute, Honors, and Obituary:
Recognizing and Honoring a Fallen Hero, Who Served Within the Mississippi National Guard. “Fallen, Yet Not Forgotten”.
In recognition of our proud American tradition of honorable service which our military men and women have given to their country and our State, we honor a Fallen Hero. Our nation, our state, and the National Guard Association of MS (NGAMS) regard the memorializing of its retired military deceased as an honorable and sacred obligation.
Another great Soldier and Fallen Hero has been released from duty, passed from our ranks on May 22, 2026, and has moved on to his heavenly home. Retired First Sergeant David Charles Nagy, age 83, Hattiesburg, MS, who served in the Shelby Installation Support Unit has departed and gone to a better place with our Lord and Savior.
It takes a special person to serve within the military for their country, giving up their family time, comfort, and safety for their country, ultimately for all Americans to enjoy their freedoms, safety, and way of life. We now applaud you for your service to our country. A special message from General Douglas McArthur remains applicable today for our servicemen that have passed: “Old Soldiers never die; they just fade away”.
Rest in Peace Soldier. We applaud your patriotism, sacrifices, and brave efforts in serving our country and your family for their support of your service. We thank you for your service. Without your efforts and your families’ support, our country would not stand so boldly, shine so bright, and live so free.
You now have earned a rest, so go fly with the Angels, go rest high on that mountain; your work on earth is done. Go to heaven a-shoutin’ Love for the Father and the Son.
Another great Soldier has gone home, “Fallen, Yet Not Forgotten, Soldier for Life”.
Obituary, visitation and service details:
Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. David Charles Nagy, 83, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on May 22, 2026, of leukemia. He was born the youngest of 9 children, on February 12, 1943, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to Andrew Joseph Nagy, Sr. and Rose Bencsics Nagy. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Janet Morris Nagy.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Rose Nagy Barfield and her husband, Craig, his son-in-law Russell Miller, and by his sister, Margaret Ahern. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Christopher Miller and his wife, Ashley; Brandon Miller and his wife, Jennifer; Alexandra Barfield; Caleb Barfield; great-grandchildren: Maddie Grace Miller; Elijah Miller; Axl Miller; Ezekiel Miller; and Elizabeth Miller and his sweetheart, Patricia Bullock Harris.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, A.J. and Rose Nagy; his daughter, Laura “Missy” Miller; and his siblings, Andrew Nagy, Jr., Eugene Nagy, Steve Nagy, Josephine Raper, Katherine Baurax, Ann Kramer, and Pauline Holmes.
David graduated from Hattiesburg High School. He enlisted to serve his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. In 1978, he joined the National Guard, faithfully serving the people of Mississippi through hurricanes, natural disasters, and active duty in Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield until his retirement in 2003. Simultaneously, his career took him to Hercules chemical plant where he spent 25 years, retiring in 1994. He later worked with the Youth Challenge Program at Camp Shelby, where he made a lasting impact on countless young people who came through the program. He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he was a familiar and constant presence every Saturday at the 4:00 p.m. Mass as an usher.
David had a servant’s heart and would do anything for anyone in need. He loved his family, his country, and the Lord. He was an incredible father to his two daughters and taught them that they could do anything. He was an even more devoted grandfather and great-grandfather, often spending countless hours outside digging in the garden or fishing with his grandchildren. David will be remembered for the love he shared with his family, his faithful service to others, and the legacy he leaves behind in the lives of those who knew him. His memory will be cherished by all who had the blessing of knowing him.
Our family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the nurses at Forrest General Home Health and Hospice, the nurses at the Hattiesburg Cancer Center transfusion unit, as well as Dr. Carter Milner, Heather, and all the nursing staff of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at UMMC, for their extraordinary care over the last year and a half. Lovingly known as “PawPaw” to all his nurses, David was cared for with great compassion, and we could not have asked for better people to walk alongside him during this time. We would also like to thank all our family and friends for their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Visitation will be held from 5:30-8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 26 at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg with a Rosary at 5:00pm. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with visitation at from 9:30 am until the service begins. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Sacred Heart School for its new playground project or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
