Obituary

Military Service Tribute, Honors, and Obituary:

Recognizing and Honoring a Fallen Hero, Who Served Within the Mississippi National Guard. “Fallen, Yet Not Forgotten”.

In recognition of our proud American tradition of honorable service which our military men and women have given to their country and our State, we honor a Fallen Hero.  Our nation, our state, and the National Guard Association of MS (NGAMS) regard the memorializing of its retired military deceased as an honorable and sacred obligation.

Another great Soldier and Fallen Hero has been released from duty, passed from our ranks on Feb 4, 2025, and has moved on to his heavenly home.  Retired Sergeant First Class Alvin George Carlander Jr., age 83, who had served within the 1355th S&S Company has departed and gone to a better place with our good Lord.

It takes a special person to serve within the military for their country, giving up their family time, comfort, and safety for their country, ultimately for all Americans to enjoy their freedoms, safety, and way of life. We now applaud you for your service to our country.  A special message from General Douglas McArthur remains applicable today for our servicemen that have passed: “Old Soldiers never die; they just fade away”.

Rest in Peace Soldier.  We applaud your patriotism, sacrifices, and brave efforts in serving our country and your family for their support of your service. We thank you for your service. Without your efforts and your families’ support, our country would not stand so boldly, shine so bright, and live so free.

You now have earned a rest, so go fly with the Angels, go rest high on that mountain; your work on earth is done. Go to heaven a-shoutin’ Love for the Father and the Son.

Another great Soldier has gone home, “Fallen, Yet Not Forgotten, Soldier for Life”.

Obituary, visitation, and services:

Alvin George Carlander Jr., 83, of Vancleave, MS, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and strength. Born on August 22, 1941, in Charleston, South Carolina, he was the cherished son of the late Alvin George and Lula Tanner Carlander Sr.

Alvin’s remarkable journey through life was filled with love and devotion. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Kimberly Dawn Carlander, and his treasured grandson, Caleb. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Alvin George Sr. and Lula, and his beloved sisters, Margie, Doris, and Jean, who will surely be welcoming him with open arms.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Mrs. Geraldine Tanner Carlander, who stood by his side through thick and thin. His spirit lives on in his adoring children: Georgiann (Mike) Nelson, Alvin “Bubba” (Tracy) Carlander, and Belinda (Scott) Satcher, along with his precious grandchildren-Amber (Ed), Tonya, Nicole (Leo), Misty, Stormie, Nick (Ashley), Bobby (Kelly), Brantley, Autumn, and Jeremy-and a joyful brood of twenty great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his siblings, Gerald and Lula, and a multitude of other family and friends who were touched by his generous heart.

A true patriot, Alvin dedicated 23 years of service in the Army National Guard, followed by an impressive 33 years in Civil Service. He was an esteemed member of the Masonic Lodge and took great pride in cooking for church benefits at the campgrounds, often bringing friends and family together over a shared meal. His love for music was evident as he expertly played the guitar and harmonica, filling the air with melodies that captured moments of joy.

Alvin was a master storyteller, spinning tales that brought laughter and warmth to gatherings. He had an infectious passion for cooking, always ensuring that everyone had enough to eat before serving himself-a true testament to his generous spirit. He was a deeply spiritual man, serving as a pastor and elder of the Community of Christ Church in Moss Point. Whether it was a weekend spent on the houseboat or cherished moments watching television, he brought warmth and laughter into the lives of those around him.

Visitation will be held at 10 am on Monday, February 10, 2025, at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Vancleave. The funeral service will begin at 11 am, followed by a burial at the RLDS Cemetery located at 12205 Mt. Pleasant Rd, Vancleave, MS 39565.

Holder-Wells is honored to serve the Carlander family during this difficult time. We ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this profound loss. Alvin’s legacy of love and generosity will forever reside in the hearts of those he touched.
