Obituary

Military Service Tribute, Honors, and Obituary:

Recognizing and Honoring a Fallen Hero, Who Served Within the Mississippi National Guard. “Fallen, Yet Not Forgotten”.

In recognition of our proud American tradition of honorable service which our military men and women have given to their country and our State, we honor a Fallen Hero.  Our nation, our state, and the National Guard Association of MS (NGAMS) regard the memorializing of its retired military deceased as an honorable and sacred obligation.

Another great Soldier and Fallen Hero has been released from duty, passed from our ranks on October 8, 2025, and has moved on to his heavenly home.  Retired Sergeant First Class James Larry Lambert, age 81, who had served with the Company A, 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry Regiment and 890th Engineer Battalion has departed and gone to a better place with our good Lord.

It takes a special person to serve within the military for their country, giving up their family time, comfort, and safety for their country, ultimately for all Americans to enjoy their freedoms, safety, and way of life. We now applaud you for your service to our country.  A special message from General Douglas McArthur remains applicable today for our servicemen that have passed: “Old Soldiers never die; they just fade away”.

Rest in Peace Soldier.  We applaud your patriotism, sacrifices, and brave efforts in serving our country and your family for their support of your service. We thank you for your service. Without your efforts and your families’ support, our country would not stand so boldly, shine so bright, and live so free.

You now have earned a rest, so go fly with the Angels, go rest high on that mountain; your work on earth is done. Go to heaven a-shoutin’ Love for the Father and the Son.

Another great Soldier has gone home, “Fallen, Yet Not Forgotten, Soldier for Life”.

Obituary, Visitation, and Service Details:

February 8. 1944 – October 8, 2025

James Larry Lambert, an exceptional son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend,

passed to his eternal rest on October 8, 2025. He was born on February 8, 1944 to Woodrow C. and Johnnie Mae Alexander Lambert at Walthall Hospital in Tylertown, MS.

When he was about seven, the family moved to Chicago, IL due to his father being transferred with the Illinois Central Railroad. Larry was a huge asset to his parents. When his dad developed cancer, Larry quit day school, started attending night school, and worked for the railroad during the day to support the family while his dad recovered. He kept up his studies and graduated Christian Fenger High School with his class. The family moved back to Mississippi in the early 60’s. He continued to work and help support his family.

Larry met the love of his life in 1968 when he walked into Tylertown Bank one Saturday morning. He shared that when he saw Gwyn, he told an acquaintance that he was going to marry that girl. He got the man standing between them to make introductions. They married May 1, 1970, sharing 55 years, 5 months together. They were blessed with three children; James L. Lambert, Jr.(Narges-deceased), Donna L. Cothren(Lane), and Michael C. Lambert(Michelle). They were blessed with six grandchildren: Nicholas Lambert, Chayann Lambert, Clay Cothren, Jacob Lambert, Shelby C. Jenkins(Zach), and Matthew Lambert(Mia) all of whom survive him. He is also survived by a brother, Billy Lambert, Uncle LW Alexander, Aunt Helen W. Alexander, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, brother Woodie Lambert, daughter-in-love Narges Balouch-Lambert, and parents-in-law Ellie and Mildred Ward Wood.

Larry retired from Walthall County Schools in 2000, having been a teacher of Learning Disabilities. He served in the United States Army (1968-1971) and in 1976, joined the Mississippi Army National Guard,155th Mechanized Infantry, in Tylertown, MS. He later transferred to Co. C. 890th Combat Engineer Battalion in Columbia, MS, retiring in 1994. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran and a proud member of the First Calvary Division. He was happy to meet fellow Tylertown native Clinton Ellzey at Fire Base Daffy where they were stationed in Vietnam. They have remained life long friends. Larry suffered multiple effects from Agent Orange (throughout many years) which led to his passing.

Larry enjoyed hunting, reading, listening to country music, watching college football, the news, and law enforcement/game warden shows on TV. A favorite day would be spent eating at May’s then going to the Sports Center to visit with customers and tease Stevie Kennedy. Visits with family and friends were always a treat. He was a faithful member of New Zion Baptist Church until his health declined. He was a member of American Legion Post 56, as well as the National Rifle Association.

We extend our appreciation to Compassus Hospice and Forrest General Home Health for the excellent care and love given to Larry and his family during his final illness. We also thank Forrest General, Walthall General, Southwest MS Regional Medical Center, Walthall Rural Health, and Hattiesburg Clinic for their excellent care. Further gratitude is extended to Minnie Anders, Kathy Willems, and Charlotte Cox for graciously helping take care of Larry when needed.

Visitation will be October 17, 2025 from 6:00 to 9:00 at Capps Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Saturday, October 18 from to services at  New Zion Baptist Church. Burial will be in New Zion Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Judes, Shriners Children’s Hospital, Walthall Food Pantry, or your charity of choice. Capps Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
