Obituary
Honoring a Fallen Hero, Who Served Within the Mississippi National Guard
In recognition of our proud American tradition of honorable service which our military men and women have given to their country and our State, we honor a Fallen Hero. Our nation, our state, and the National Guard Association of MS (NGAMS) regard the memorializing of its retired military deceased as an honorable and sacred obligation.
Another great Soldier and Fallen Hero has been released from duty, passed from our ranks on March 24, 2022, and moved on to his heavenly home. SFC(Ret) Denis Ray Hartzog, Sr., age 69, a retired member of the MS Army National Guard who had served and worked full-time within the HHC, 106th Support Battalion, Monticello, has departed and gone to a better place with our good Lord.
It takes a special person to serve within the military for their country, giving up their family time, comfort, and safety for their country, ultimately for all Americans to enjoy their freedoms, safety, and way of life. We now applaud you for your service to our country. A special message from General Douglas McArthur remains applicable today for our servicemen that have passed: “Old Soldiers never die; they just fade away”.
Rest in Peace Soldier. We applaud your patriotism and brave efforts in serving our country and your family for their support of your service. We thank you for your service. Without your efforts and your families’ support, this country would not stand so boldly, shine so bright and live so free.
You now have earned a rest, so go fly with the Angels, go rest high on that mountain; your work on earth is done. Go to heaven a-shoutin’ Love for the Father and the Son.

Memorial services for Mr. Denis Ray Hartzog, Sr. will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Saulters Moore Funeral Chapel. Private inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Silver Creek. Reverend Mike Sutton will officiate.
Mr. Denis Ray Hartzog, Sr. was born on September 26, 1951, in Natchez, MS to Homer Hartzog, Sr and Zella Mae Ready Hartzog. He departed this life late Thursday night, March 24, 2022, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Jackson, MS.
Mr. Hartzog could be best described as a family man. He would bend over backwards to make sure his family was provided for and that they were happy. The dearest thing on this earth to him was his precious grandchildren. Mr. Hartzog was retired as an E6 Staff Sergeant in the Army National Guard. He was very proud of his military service and went on to work at L 3 in Gluckstadt, MS, where he manufactured parts for military aircraft. In keeping with this training as a Staff Sergeant, it was characteristic of Mr. Hartzog to speak his mind…and then convince you to agree with him. In addition, Mr. Hartzog loved to watch Westerns, especially those featuring the iconic John Wayne and liked to fish. Mr. Hartzog was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Silver Creek, MS.
Mr. Hartzog was preceded in death by his parents, Homer, Jr. and Zella Mae Hartzog; his wife, Cathy Thornton Hartzog; the mother of his children, Cookie Hartzog Becton; his son, Sean Hartzog and his daughter, Crystal Hartzog.
His memory will forever be cherished by his sons, Denis Ray Hartzog, Jr. (Crystal) of Silver Creek, Jacob Hartzog of Savannah, GA; 2 daughters, Skyler Austin (Joseph) of Rincon, GA, Amber Wells of Amarillo, TX; 1 brother, Ronnie Hartzog (Deb) of PA, 1 sister, Cindy Hartzog Richardson of Johnson City, TN; grandchildren, Xan Hartzog, Charleen Kay Hartzog, Ash Hartzog, Elizabeth Austin, Conner Austin, Jacob Wells, Heavenly Wells and a host of extended family.
